NSBM Industry Preparation Training (IPT), the pioneering industry transformation programme of NSBM Computing Undergraduates, concluded its Chapter 2 for 2023, which culminated in an awarding ceremony, where the students were awarded certificates for successfully completing the programme. 

The awarding ceremony was held on 2nd September 2023 at NSBM Auditorium in the graceful presence of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chaminda Rathnayake, the Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Dr. Rasika Ranaweera, the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Ms. Pavithra Subashini, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Network and Security, Mr. Chamara Disanayake and, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Information and Systems Sciences, Ms. Chalani Oruthotaarachchi, Manager – NFORCE, Mr. Mohomad Rushdi and other academics of NSBM Faculty of Computing.   

Completing eight remarkable days, the programme comprised a series of informative and practical sessions conducted by a panel of experienced IT professionals from leading IT firms, along with the facilitation of NSBM academics.  

Day 01 

On the Day 1 of the programme, Computing students participated in an insightful session conducted by Deputy Vice Chancellor on how NSBM students should become future-ready employees and the Head of the Department of Software Engineering made the students aware of the IPT programme, its objectives and plan. The day also comprised an interactive session that boosted student motivation conducted by Mr. Krishantha Dinesh – Senior Solution Architect, Virtusa Pvt Ltd, and a session conducted by Mr. Akila Panditha, Software Architect, Sysco LABS, on IT Industry overview and expectations. 

Day 02 

On Day 2, the undergraduates had the privilege of participating in an interactive session which covered multiple invaluable areas, viz the art of problem-solving, guidance for selecting a career path, transforming from academic to industry, and navigating through a career. The session was conducted by Mr. Krishantha Dinesh, Senior Solution Architect of Virtusa Pvt Ltd. 

Day 03 

On Day 3 of IPT 2023, NSBM computing students had the privilege of participating in an insightful session under the topics of “Software Processes” and “Agile Practices”. The session was successfully conducted by Mr. Thusitha Senanayake, General Manager – Global Process Excellence at Axiata Digital Labs, with the inclusion of multiple interactive tools.  

Day 04 

The morning phase of Day 4 was facilitated by IFS (Pvt) Ltd. and comprised the session on Industry Expectations which was conducted by Mr. Kasun Ariyadasa, Senior Director – Software Engineering and the Technical session conducted by Mr. Ishan Fernando, Director Software Engineering & Mr. Dinithi Kurukulasuriya, Senior Product Specialist. Whilst the evening phase was facilitated by HCL tec. and the sessions were conducted by Mr. Siyasi Kaja, Global Delivery Center Manager, Mr. Sadeem Thawfeeq, Associate Manager – HR and Mr. Chanika Jayaratne, Deputy Manager – HR. 

Day 05 

Session 1 of Day 5 focused on Essential Security, which was conducted by Mr. Tharaka Mahabage, Cyber Security Architect from Virtusa, whilst Session 2 was conducted by Dr. Kushani de Silva, a global expert in risk reduction and risk management, safety, and security on the topic of Complex Problem-Solving. 

Day 06 

The morning phase of Day 6 focused on technical skills development based on topics of robotic process automation, quality engineering, performance engineering, and Microsoft power platforms. The sessions were facilitated by Fortude and masterfully conducted by Mr. Harshana Kuruppu, Associate Vice President – Quality Engineering and Intelligence Automation, Ms. Keshalya Jayapalraj, Assistant Manager – HR Business Partner, Mr. Nadeera Hettiarachi, Senior Technical Lead – Quality Engineering, Mr. Udaya Chaturanga, Technical lead – Microsoft Power Platform. The evening phase included sessions on Quality Engineering practices, with the facilitation of Exactpro Sri Lanka. They were conducted by Mr. Kapila  Karunaratne, Head of Delivery – Testing, and Ms. Aneeta Weerasekara, Senior HR Consultant.  

Day 07 

Day 7 included a common session which was carried out by MillenniumIT ESP. The session for the undergraduates of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering was conducted by hSenid on “Mobile Applications,” and the session for the Department of Information and Systems Sciences was on “Product Management,” which was conducted by Orange HRM whilst for Network Security undergraduates the session was conducted on “Server Implementation”.  

Day 08 

Day 8 comprised sessions on “Trends in the Industry” by Sampath Thirimavitharana, Director – Virtusa Sri Lanka, “Interview Preparation” by Aniston Leo, Associate Consultant HR – Virtusa Sri Lanka, “CV Writing” By Edutech and “IT Project Management” By Mr. Vice President – Delivery / Segment Head at Virtusa Sri Lanka. 

The Industry Preparation Programme (IPT) is an initiative of NSBM’s Faculty of Computing, which is designed to prepare computing undergraduates for a smooth and easy transition to industrial life by equipping them with practical training and theoretical learning to tackle the challenges of the modern industrial landscape.
