NSBM Nursing Students Gain Oncology Care Experience at Maharagama National Institute of Cancer

The Department of Health Sciences of our Faculty of Science organized an educational visit to the National Institute of Cancer, Maharagama (Apeksha Hospital) for Nursing Batches 23.1 and 23.2.

The visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the management of patients with cancer and the multidisciplinary approaches involved in cancer care. Through interactive learning sessions and observations, students enhanced their understanding of oncology nursing, patient-centered care, and the various treatment modalities utilized in cancer management.

During the visit, students were able to broaden their knowledge of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgical interventions, symptom management, and the psychosocial support provided to patients and their families throughout the cancer care journey.
As part of their professional learning journey, the visit served as an important platform for bridging classroom learning with real-world clinical practice, further enriching students’ professional development and clinical competencies in specialized nursing care.

NSBM Green University extends its sincere gratitude to the Director, Chief Nursing Officer, and the nursing staff of the Health Education Unit of the National Institute of Cancer, Maharagama, for facilitating this valuable educational experience. This visit was organized under the guidance of Senior Grade Nursing Tutor Mrs. Sandyani de Silva, Principal and Course Coordinator of the Nursing Programme.
