NSBM conducts 5th CPD session on “Crafting Learning Journeys: Introduction to Learning and Instructional Design”
NSBM Quality Assurance and Staff Development Center successfully conducted its 5th Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Session for 2025 on Tuesday, 18th November on the theme of “Crafting Learning Journeys: Introduction to Learning and Instructional Design”
The session was conducted by Prof. Kaushalya Yatigammana, Professor in Digital Learning, Department of Commerce & Financial Management, University of Kelaniya and Chairperson of the Board of Study in Digital Learning.
The session provided an insightful overview of how effective educational experiences are structured. The event covered foundational theories explaining how adult learners acquire knowledge, emphasizing principles of instructional design such as clear objectives and learner engagement. Academic participants learned how to craft tailored learning journeys by progressively building skills with relevant content and scaffolding techniques.
The session also highlighted strategies for designing engaging materials, including multimedia use and real-world applications, to maintain motivation. Moreover, emphasis was placed on the importance of continuous evaluation, gathering feedback, and refining courses to meet evolving learner needs. Prof. Yatigammana shared best practices for integrating different instructional methods to create cohesive experiences.
Attendees gained practical insights into combining theory and application, ensuring that learning is both effective and motivating. The workshop aimed to equip lecturers with tools to develop impactful, learner-centered programs. Overall, this CPD session offered a deeper understanding of how well-designed learning processes can transform education and professional development.
The programme was coordinated by Ms. Kaumadee Samarakoon, QA Coordinator of Faculty of Engineering under the guidance of Dr. Malsha Mendis, Head of Internal Quality Assurance, and with the advisory support of Prof. Baratha Dodankotuwa, Head of Academic Development and Quality Assurance.
