NSBM Health Sciences Department Commemorates World Suicide Prevention Day 2026
The Department of Health Sciences at NSBM Green University commemorated World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 with an awareness programme held on 19 August 2026 at the Student Center, under the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” The initiative aimed to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, reduce stigma, and encourage meaningful conversations around suicide prevention and mental health.
Organised by the Plymouth Psychology Batch 26.1 as part of their learning and experiential activities, the programme provided students with an opportunity to translate their academic knowledge into a meaningful awareness initiative within the university community.
A key feature of the programme was an insightful awareness lecture delivered by Ms. Prabuddhika Wijethunga, Licensed Psychological Counsellor, who shared valuable insights into suicide prevention, recognising risk factors, and creating supportive environments where individuals feel safe to seek help and support.
Adding a creative dimension to the initiative, the Circle of Nursing and Psychology Students presented a short film focused on suicide awareness. The film conveyed important messages on empathy, emotional support, awareness, and the importance of reaching out to individuals who may be experiencing psychological distress.
The programme was graced by Prof. Baratha Dodankotuwa, Head – Academic Development and Quality Assurance; Dr. Nuwanthi Katuwavila, Dean – Faculty of Science; Dr. Madhavi Hewadikaram, Dean – Faculty of Postgraduate Studies and Professional Advancement; and the Head – Department of Health Sciences, together with academic staff and students. Their presence and support contributed to the success of the programme and encouraged meaningful engagement with this important initiative.
The awareness programme served as a valuable platform for connecting academic learning with community engagement, while highlighting the role of psychology students in promoting mental health awareness and fostering a compassionate, supportive, and inclusive university environment.
Through initiatives such as these, NSBM Green University continues to encourage students to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom and contribute positively to the wellbeing of the wider university community.
