The Department of Legal Studies at NSBM Green University successfully hosted Orator’s Odyssey 2026, an Interschool English Debate Competition themed “Justice for Mother Nature,” bringing together talented young debaters from leading schools across Sri Lanka for a day of intellectual engagement, critical discourse and advocacy on environmental justice.

The event was graced by Prof. Thilini De Silva, Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic, Ms. Anne Pathiranage, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Prof. Shanthi Segarajasingham, Head of the Department of Legal Studies, and esteemed lecturers attached to the Faculty.

A key highlight of the event was the insightful address delivered by the Chief Guest and Guest Speaker, Prof. Kokila Konasinghe, Professor of Law, University of Colombo. Her address offered valuable perspectives on environmental law, sustainability and the role of future generations in advancing justice and protecting the natural world.

The competition featured three highly competitive rounds, challenging participants to demonstrate their abilities in critical thinking, argumentation, rebuttal and persuasive public speaking. The debates reflected the participants’ impressive oratory skills, intellectual engagement and understanding of the complex environmental challenges facing contemporary society.

Following an exceptional display of debating excellence, Negombo South International School, Piliyandala emerged as the Champion, while Nalanda College, Colombo secured the position of First Runner-Up.

Orator’s Odyssey 2026 provided a meaningful platform for school students to engage with an important contemporary issue while developing the skills and confidence needed to articulate ideas, engage in constructive debate and approach complex issues from multiple perspectives.
