NSBM Finance Students Explore the Impact of AI on Finance

The Department of Accounting and Finance of the Faculty of Business at NSBM Green University recently organised a guest lecture on “AI-Enabled Finance & Transformation of the Finance Function” for first-year Accounting and Finance students, as part of the Introduction to Finance module.
The session provided students with an opportunity to explore how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are transforming the finance function and influencing the evolving roles of finance professionals. The discussion focused on connecting foundational academic knowledge with practical insights from the industry.
The session featured two industry professionals as resource persons: Mr. Bhagya Fernando, Assistant Manager – Group Risk & Control, Brandix, and Mr. Thathsara Ranasinghe, Chief Operating Officer, Infinity Learning Space. Drawing on their professional experience, the resource persons shared perspectives on the growing application of AI and technology in finance, the changing expectations of finance professionals, and the skills required to adapt to an increasingly technology-driven industry.
Adding a practical dimension to the learning experience, students also participated in a Creative Video Reel activity following the session. The activity encouraged them to reflect on the concepts discussed and communicate their understanding through a creative, real-world perspective.
The initiative reflects NSBM Green University’s continued efforts to strengthen industry engagement and provide students with learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. It also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, through industry-informed learning; SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by introducing students to technological innovation in finance; and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, by supporting the development of future-ready skills.
The Department of Accounting and Finance extends its appreciation to Mr. Bhagya Fernando and Mr. Thathsara Ranasinghe for sharing their expertise and insights with the students, and to all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the session.
