The NSBM English Day 2023: Empowering Digital Cultures, held on August 29th, 2023, at the NSBM Green University, stands as a remarkable triumph. Organized by the Department of English and Modern Languages, the event forged an all-encompassing platform to exalt and enrich the creative language skills of students from schools across the island. 

Throughout the day, a vibrant tapestry of colours and bustling activities unfolded, with live contests in diverse locations within NSBM Green University. The array of inter-school competitions included a drama competition, a prepared speech contest, essay and poetry composition, and a literary and linguistic quiz competition. 

With participation spanning more than 30 schools across the island, nearly 300 competitors converged to compete for victory from the morning until the afternoon. By sundown, these feisty competitors were awarded at an Awards eve for their many talents and skills in the above categories, judged by an independent panel of experts in the field.   

The outcome of the assessments unveiled a sequence of achievements: Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, secured the honour of ‘Best Drama’, Royal College, Colombo, swept both the Lit-Lang Challenge and the 1st Prize for Poetry Writing in the O/L Category. Musaeus College outshone others in the Essay Writing O/L category, while the A/L category victor emerged from Mahanama College, Colombo. The Prepared Speech competition witnessed over 100 participants from various corners of the island vying for the O/L and A/L category’s top honours. The crown of victory was seized by contestants from Hejaaz International School and Visaka Vidyalaya, Colombo, respectively. 

The distinguished Awards ceremony welcomed the esteemed presence of notable figures: Prof. E.A. Weerasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of NSBM Green University; Mr. Orlando Edwards, Country Director of the British Council, Sri Lanka; and acclaimed writer Mr. Andrew Fidel Fernando. The evening was further graced by the attendance of Prof. Chaminda Rathnayake, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. Bharatha Dodankotuwa, Head of Academic Development and Quality Assurance, both lending prestige to the occasion. The event was also graced by the presence of Ms. Thilini De Silva, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Dr. Nuwanthie Katuwavila, Dean of the Faculty of Science, alongside numerous other academic and administrative personnel. 

For the students, teachers, and parents who came from every corner of the island, the evening unfolded as a tapestry filled with unprecedented experiences and boundless inspiration. With the promise of returning with NSBM English Day 2024, the event concluded, leaving many with unforgettable memories.
