The Biomedical Science students of the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science, NSBM Green University, have achieved a remarkable double victory at the Inter-University Undergraduate Poster Competition 2026, organised by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), Section E2 (Chemical Sciences).

Held on 12 September 2026 at the SLAAS Headquarters, the competition brought together undergraduate students from universities across Sri Lanka to showcase innovative research, scientific thinking and ideas addressing contemporary challenges in the field of chemical sciences.

Continuing an impressive winning streak, the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science, secured First Place in both competition themes, marking the third consecutive time this year that the Faculty of Science has achieved First Place at an inter-university competition.

Representing NSBM, two teams of Biomedical Science undergraduates competed under two timely and forward-looking themes.

Theme 1 – Green Chemistry & Clean Energy: Designing a Future Beyond Fossil Fuels

The team comprising R. D. Perera, K. M. Sanolee, S. B. Herath, S. S. Somarathne and O. D. Wijayasiri secured First Place for their innovative contribution to the theme, demonstrating their ability to explore sustainable approaches to some of the pressing environmental and energy challenges of the present day.

Theme 2 – Smart Chemistry: The Role of AI in Modern Chemical Research

The second team, comprising Prasadi Hettiarachchi, Pulitha Jagoda, Dewmini Hettiarachchi, Sayumi Ekanayake and Vithurshika Maheshwaran, also secured First Place. Their achievement highlighted the students’ ability to examine the growing intersection between artificial intelligence and modern chemical research, reflecting the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of contemporary scientific innovation.

The success of both teams was further strengthened by the dedicated guidance and mentorship of Mr. Lavan Kumar, Lecturer in Chemistry, Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science, whose support played an important role in preparing the students for the competition.

With both participating teams emerging as champions, this achievement marks another significant milestone for the Faculty of Science and further reflects the growing culture of research, innovation and academic excellence at NSBM Green University.

The double victory at SLAAS 2026 stands as a testament to the capabilities of NSBM’s Biomedical Science undergraduates and their readiness to contribute innovative, research-driven solutions to emerging challenges in science, technology and sustainability.
