Prof. J.M. Ruwan S. Appuhamy is a graduate of the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, where he obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering. He holds an MSc in Earthquake Engineering from the University of Pavia, Italy and a PhD in Structural Engineering from Ehime University, Japan.
He possesses over two decades of diverse national and international experience spanning academia, research and industrial design engineering. He began his academic career at the University of Ruhuna as a Senior Lecturer in January 2013, later serving as the Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and was promoted to Full Professor in June 2024. In early 2026, he took his sabbatical leave to work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the i-Constructions laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Tokyo, Japan. Prior to his academic tenure, he worked globally as a Design Engineer, notably handling large-scale mining, infrastructure, and structural design projects for Knight Piesold Company in Australia and China Harbor Engineering Company, Sri Lanka.
Prof. Appuhamy joined NSBM Green University in May 2026 as a Professor attached to the Department of Mechatronic and Industrial Engineering, where he is currently leveraging his extensive expertise to spearhead the development of the Department of Civil Engineering. His research specialized areas primarily focus on structural, bridge, and earthquake engineering, with a prolific portfolio of over 130 research publications, including widely cited papers in prominent international journals and book chapters. Recognizing his contributions to academic and research excellence, he has been honored with multiple awards, including the Vice Chancellors Awards at the University of Ruhuna Academic Sessions, International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE), Sri Lanka and 18th Shikouku Gakkai in Japan.
