Profile

Prof. L. P. Jayatissa is a distinguished academic, researcher, and environmental scientist with extensive expertise in Botany, Mangrove Ecology, Ecotoxicology, coastal ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and environmental sustainability. He currently serves as a Professor attached to the Department of Life Sciences at NSBM Faculty of Science, while also holding the position of Professor Emeritus at the University of Ruhuna. He is additionally a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka and serves on the Board of Directors of the Lanka Mangrove Museum, Pambala, Sri Lanka.
Prof. Jayatissa holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Bioscience from the University of Ruhuna, an M.Phil. in Mangrove Ecology from the University of Ruhuna, and a Ph.D. in Ecotoxicology from the University of Stirling, United Kingdom. His academic and professional journey has been complemented by specialised training in areas including Integrated Coastal Management, Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Throughout his career, Prof. Jayatissa has undertaken significant leadership and administrative responsibilities, including First Chairman of the National School of Business Management (NSBM), First Dean and subsequently Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Ruhuna, and Chief Executive Officer and Director of University College of Matara.
His research career spans several decades and has made substantial contributions to the understanding and conservation of mangrove ecosystems and coastal environments in Sri Lanka. He has authored or co-authored more than 135 research publications, including 45 papers published in Science Citation Index (SCI)-indexed journals. Prof. Jayatissa has also made significant contributions to postgraduate education through the supervision and co-supervision of Ph.D. and M.Phil. research programmes.
His contributions extend beyond conventional academic research. He is a holder of a Sri Lankan patent for the production of phenolics-free fruit pulp from mangrove apple (Sonneratia caseolaris), developed for use in products such as ice cream and fruit drinks.
Prof. Jayatissa has held several important editorial and academic review roles, including serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Ruhuna Journal of Science and as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. He has also served as a reviewer for numerous international SCI-indexed journals.
His research work has been supported through international funding and collaborative initiatives including the TROPIMUNDO Erasmus Mundus programme, the French-funded FSPI project, the French Government’s research funding for blue carbon studies, the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), and the University Development Cooperation of Belgium’s VLIR Own Initiative programme.
Prof. Jayatissa has maintained research collaborations with leading international institutions, including Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium; the French Institute of Pondicherry, India; Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia; and Edinburgh Napier University, United Kingdom
Prof. Jayatissa’s extensive portfolio, academic leadership, and national and international recognition have established him as a prominent figure in the fields of tropical ecology and environmental science.
