Ending the year on a defining note, applauding the true spirit of sportsmanship and grit, NSBM Green University celebrated the achievements gained by NSBM’s own sportsmen & sportswomen at the prestigious NSBM Colours 2019.
The grand awarding ceremony, held at the university auditorium premises on Thursday, 19 December 2019, presented an esteemed insignia of colour awards, to 197 awardees. This significant juncture was further accentuated with the presence of the Mr. Anura Dissanayaka, Ministry Secretary of Information and Communication Technology, and Higher Education, Technology & Innovation, who honored the event as the Chief Guest, including the presence of the Founder and Vice-Chancellor of NSBM Green University, Prof. E. A. Weerasinghe, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chaminda Ratnayake, Assistant General Manager, Western province South of Bank of Ceylon (The main Sponsor of the event), Mr.Sampath Perera, Head of Academic Development & Quality Assurance, Prof. Baratha Dodankotuwa, and Head of Students Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Shafraz.
The ceremony marked a milestone in NSBM history by being the first-ever colours awarding ceremony to present colours for twelve sports including, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Hockey, Martial Arts, Netball, Powerlifting, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming and Table Tennis. Each sports team was awarded a ’Best Player Award’, which recognized the most dedicated, hardworking and passionate player of the game for the year 2019. Among many eligible young sportsmen and sportswomen, Mr. Uvindu Jayasinghe was awarded the ’Most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year 2019’ and Ms. Shamindrie Perera was awarded the ’Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year 2019’.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the set of awards given to the undergraduates with exceptional performances. Recognizing the great service rendered to their alma mater in the past year for the numerous efforts to uplift the students’ affairs unit, 18 eligible nominees stemming from various clubs & societies were awarded certificates of recognition for exceptional performance.
NSBM Green University has always been a pioneer in creating young graduates with the ability to tackle multiple extra-curricular, in order to enhance their capabilities as global graduates. The university thus, from its very inception established more than 50 clubs and societies including 16 sports clubs. The year 2019 has been a victorious year for these sports clubs, having garnered several tournament championships under the name of the university. Especially the NSBM Rugby team who became the runners up at 14th UiTM International Sports Fiesta in Malaysia, the NSBM girls & boys Basketball teams & NSBM girls and boys athletic teams for emerging double champions at the NSBM USPORTS 2019 and NSBM Martial Arts team for becoming champions at the National Youth Taekwondo Championship 2019.
